The MUSC CTN team consists of clinical and scientific experts from diverse and complimentary specialties. The common mission among our faculty and staff are to contribute to the advancement of treatment for addictions through the conduct of innovative and rigorous clinical trial research.

Kelly Barth Kelly Barth, DO

Dr. Barth is a dually trained internist and addictions psychiatrist. Although relatively new to CTN, Dr. Barth has over 15 years experience in opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment and research. She is the director of MUSC's regional Project ECHO for OUD and MUSC's Pain Rehabilitation Program. She was the Lead investigator of CTN0107 and is currently the site PI for CTN0100.

Dr. Brady has been the principal investigator (PI) of the Southern Consortium Node of the Clinical Trials Network since our initial funding in 2000. Dr. Brady is a board-certified psychiatrist specializing in addiction psychiatry and has over 30 years experience in addictions research. More information

Susan Sonne Susan Sonne, PharmD

Dr. Sonne is a board-certified psychiatric pharmacist, who has been part of the SCN since our initial funding in 2000. She has run numerous clinical trials through the CTN, and has worked to identify site investigators and research teams for other SCN studies. She works closely with local site investigators and serves as liaison between the investigators and the CCTN. She also supervises protocol managers/QA specialists to ensure appropriate support to investigative teams.

Ms. Haynes has served as the SCN's Community Liaison for the last 20 years, ensuring effective communication between the community treatment providers and the academic community.

Dr. Killeen is a an advanced practice nurse and nurse researcher, who has been part of the SCN since we were initially funded in 2000. She has run a number of CTN studies, and has also served as one of our primary trainers and dissemination experts.

Dr. McClure is a clinical psychologist who has been part of the CTN for the last 10 years. She has significant experience using technology to collect data from participants. She is the National Project Director for CTN0107.

Dr. Ward is a statistician who will aid SCN investigators in conducting secondary data analyses of CTN studies. He will also provide statistical support in the development of SCN generated CTN concepts and protocols. He will work with Dr. Sonne on the Protocol Management and Administration Core.

Dr. Hartwell is a board-certified addiction psychiatrist who has expertise in neuroimaging and transcranial magnetic stimulation. She is the site principal investigator for CTN0108. She will be part of the Training/Dissemination and Implementation Core.

Dr. Lenert is the Chief Research Information Officer at MUSC and the Director of Biomedical Informatics (BMIC). He has significant expertise in pulling and analyzing information from the electronic health record (EHR). He will be part of the Health Technology Core.

Dr. Brown is a clinical psychologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Addiction Sciences Division. She is deeply involved in community outreach and serves as Co-Chair of the MUSC Addiction Sciences Community Advisory Board. She works with the SCN Community Liaison Core by facilitating the development of community partnerships.

Dr. Lopez is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences with a joint appointment in the College of Nursing. She works within the SCN Protocol Management and Administration Core to facilitate Participant Engagement Groups (PEGs) for SCN investigators with community members and patient constituents to help investigators integrate PEG feedback into their research protocol and design.

Dr. Litwin is a primary care physician and the Director of Addiction services for Prisma Health. Dr. Litwin has been a Co-I in the SCN for three years and served as a Site PI for several CTN projects. He serves as a member of the SCN Steering Committee and facilitates the identification of sites for trial conduct throughout the region.

Dr. Dahne is a clinical psychologist and Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Having significant experience in Remote Clinical Trials, she consults with SCN investigators on the use of technology in their concepts/projects with the aim to reach rural sites throughout our catchment area.

Arnold School of Public Health, University of South Carolina

Dr. Andrews has expertise in health policy, with a focus on the financing and organization of SUD treatment systems in the US and is part of the leadership team for the South Carolina Center of Excellence in Addictions. As such, she knows the key stakeholders in SC and the broader region and is conversant with emerging trends and challenges in the field, and new areas for research. She also serves as a member of the Steering Committee, advising the SCN on treatment system, policy and financing issues. She leads the PAC in providing guidance in concept and protocol development, training, D&I efforts to maximize impact on policy and payment for SUD services.

Mr. Jones has over 21 years of clinical experience and is the director of the Faces and Voices of Recovery (FAVOR) organization in Greenville, SC, organizing peer recovery services and collaborating with clinical programs throughout the state. He was instrumental in developing the coaching intervention for CTN0107. He serves as a member of the Steering Committee and as a member of the Community Liaison Core. Mr. Jones is also the SCN’s CIRCL representative.

Brenda Brunner-Jackson, MPH, CCRC

Program Manager

Ms. Brunner-Jackson has over 15 years in clinical research. She currently serves as the national regulatory and project manager for CTN0108, and the node level protocol manager and QA specialist for CTN0109 and CTN0121.

Mary Shaw, BSc

Protocol Manager/QA Specialist

Ms. Shaw has been part of the SCN for over 6 years and has been involved in clinical research for approximately 9 years. Ms. Shaw currently acts as Protocol Manager/QA Specialist for CTN0100 and CTN0107, and acts as Program Coordinator for CTN0099.
