SmartState at MUSC

The SmartState Program was created in 2002 by the South Carolina General Assembly to help transform the state’s economy. The program aims to recruit world-class researchers and scientists to serve as Endowed Chairs at the state’s three research-intensive universities, including the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC).

The Endowed Chairs reside within SmartState Centers of Economic Excellence and use their positions to:

  • Conduct research that leads to innovative technologies and spin-off companies
  • Provides educational opportunities for students
  • Creates a leadership and workforce pipeline

The true impact of MUSC research is reflected in how we translate discoveries into new modalities of care and life-changing therapeutics. Research is a dynamic force that fuels how we fulfill our mission to lead health innovation for the lives we touch.
