SmartState at MUSC

The SmartState Program was created in 2002 by the South Carolina General Assembly to help transform the state’s economy. The program aims to recruit world-class researchers and scientists to serve as Endowed Chairs at the state’s three research-intensive universities, including the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC).

The Endowed Chairs reside within SmartState Centers of Economic Excellence and use their positions to:

  • Conduct research that leads to innovative technologies and spin-off companies
  • Provides educational opportunities for students
  • Creates a leadership and workforce pipeline

Currently, MUSC has been awarded 20 Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Centers and has 38 appointed chairs among those centers.

“As we continue to transform MUSC and the health care landscape in South Carolina, we also recognize the incredible opportunity to simultaneously grow the knowledge-based economy across our state. The South Carolina SmartState Program is a critical component to recruiting and retaining world-class experts who, through collaboration and innovation, are key to MUSC’s ability to deliver on our mission of education, research and patient care.”
