Program Overview

The CDMRP funds high-impact, high-risk, and high-gain projects that other agencies may not support, filling research gaps. While each program has a unique focus, they all share the common goal of advancing paradigm-shifting research, finding cures or improving patient care, and developing breakthrough technologies and resources for clinical benefit. The hallmarks of the CDMRP include investing in groundbreaking research, targeting critical gaps, using a two-tier formal review process without standing peer review panels or a "pay line", involving consumer advocates throughout the program cycle, supporting both the next generation of researchers and established scientists, funding the full pipeline of research development (including basic, translational, and clinical research), and fostering collaboration and synergy.

Strategies for Success

  • Read the Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for mechanism intent, research focus areas, submission information, administrative and regulatory requirements, and review criteria.
  • Address the impact of the project by proposing solutions to significant problems and clearly articulating translatability.
  • Clearly explain how the proposed project is relevant and how it aligns with program-specific goals.
  • Propose innovative projects that fill the gaps and use novel approaches to accelerate progress.
  • Ensure the projects’ feasibility by providing evidence of appropriate expertise, properly powered studies, and access to critical resources and subject populations.
  • Clearly explain the proposed work, keeping in mind the different audiences of the peer and programmatic review.
