February 03, 2023
As of January 25, 2023, the NIH Resource Sharing plan and the Data Management & Sharing plan have been divided into two separate documents.

The NIH Resource Sharing plan formerly included elements of the Data Management & Sharing Plan, but as of the release of Forms H (January 25, 2023), they have been divided into two separate documents.

Resource Sharing Plan

Data Management & Sharing Plan

Applies to:

NIH grant applications that will develop unique research resources through NIH-sponsored research (unless otherwise specified in the announcement).

Applies to:

NIH grant applications that will generate scientific data*:

  • Research Projects (R)
  • Some Career Development Awards (Ks)
  • Small Business SBIR/STTR
  • Research Centers (P, U)

NIH activity codes subject to the DMS Policy

The following mechanisms don't generate scientific data.*

Training (T), Fellowships (Fs), Construction (C06), Conference Grants (R13), Resource (Gs), Research-Related Infrastructure Programs (e.g., S06).

Content included:

Model organisms
(all applications anticipating the development of model organisms should include a description of a specific plan for sharing and distributing or state why such sharing is restricted or not possible)

Research tools

(sharing of unique research resources developed through NIH-sponsored research and their associated research findings)

This data isn't included: final research data & genomic data.

Content included:

  • Data Type

  • Related Tools, Software and/or Code

  • Standards

  • Data Preservation, Access, and Associated Timelines

  • Access, Distribution, or Reuse Considerations

  • Genomic Data Sharing Policy

  • (For proposed research generating human genomic data within the scope of the GDS Policy)

  • Scientific data does not include laboratory notebooks, preliminary analyses, completed case report forms, drafts of scientific papers, plans for future research, peer reviews, communications with colleagues, or physical objects such as laboratory specimens.
