Overview

The MUSC Specialized Center of Research Excellence (SCORE) on Sex Differences, in conjunction with the Office of Research Development, offered two workshops related to Incorporating Sex as a Biological Variable into basic and clinical research in February 2021.

Incorporating Sex as a Biological Variable Workshop- Grant Writing Considerations

Drs. McRae-Clark & Reichel will lead a general workshop open to all faculty, staff, students, and postdocs discussing strategies and best practices for incorporating sex as a biological variable into both basic and clinically-focused research grants.

Workshop Leaders

  • Aimee McRae-Clark, Pharm.D., is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences and the Department of Neuroscience, with over 20 years of clinical research grant writing and submission experience focused on sex and gender. She is the contact PI of the MUSC SCORE on Sex Differences (U54DA016511).
  • Carmela Reichel, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Neuroscience with over 15 years of basic science research grant writing and submission experience. She is Co-PI of the MUSC SCORE basic science component.

Incorporating Sex as a Biological Variable Workshop- Statistical & Design Considerations

Dr. Ramakrishnan & Mr. Baker will lead a general workshop open to all faculty, staff, students, and postdocs discussing statistical considerations when incorporating sex as a biological variable into both basic and clinically-focused research grants.

Workshop Leaders

  • Viswanathan Ramakrishnan, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences, with over 31 years of collaborative biostatistical research experience. He is Co-PI of the MUSC SCORE Biostatistics Core.
  • Nathaniel Baker, MS, is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences with over 12 years of collaborative biostatistical research experience. He is Co-PI of the MUSC SCORE Biostatistics Core.
