Integrated Departmental Education for Administrators

 

Welcome to the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Integrated Departmental Education for Administrators (IDEA) program. IDEA is a comprehensive initiative developed to meet the research administration needs of our campus. There is no fee to participate in the program. By investing in the careers of its research administrators, MUSC seeks to increase their effectiveness and streamline the administrative process related to research administration.

Applications for Spring 2026 are now closed. 

The goals of this program are to:

  • Help ensure compliance to state, federal, and university policies and procedures.
  • Provide staff with training (and tools) for their role in grant administration.
  • Improve research administration service to faculty.

Administrative Pipeline

MUSC research administrators have one location that contains a comprehensive set of policies and procedures, tips and tricks, templates and contacts, and other pertinent information required to prepare proposals, obtain sponsor funding, and manage successful awards. This landing page is a bookmarkable site that assists administrators and researchers in the never-ending quest for funding and features key support services to guide university research administrators through the award life cycle. The Pipeline for Research Administrators provides details on how to find funding, the proposal development and pre-award processes, budget development and associated cost principles, post-award management, research integrity, project closeout, discovery and innovation, best practices, key research resources, national professional organizations, and the MUSC research support offices.

Amy Bradshaw

Amy Bradshaw is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology. In addition to running her own laboratory, she also serves as the Research Integrity Officer for MUSC. This position is charged with addressing any and all concerns related to allegations of Research Misconduct as MUSC including inquiries and investigations. The position is also tasked with providing education to faculty, staff, trainees, and students on federal standards and definitions of Research Misconduct.

Carter Brand

Carter Brand serves as a Grant Administrator for the office of Grants & Contracts Accounting. In this role, Carter is responsible for post-award administration of sponsored grants and contracts awarded to the university. These responsibilities include financial reporting, applying cost accounting standards to project expenditures, interpreting sponsor and institutional policies, invoicing, administration, and cash management. He is also a liaison between the sponsor and the University. Carter joined GCA after receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of South Carolina and has been at MUSC for 8 years. More recently, Carter obtained his Master’s in Business Administration from The Citadel.

Sarah Brewer

Sarah Brewer, MA, is a Senior Prospective Reimbursement Analysis Manager with nearly 20 years of experience in research, including eight years focused on research billing compliance and research administration. Her work includes conducting research billing audits, supporting quality assurance activities, and reviewing billing practices for a wide range of research studies. Sarah works closely with study teams, Revenue Integrity, Epic Research, and other stakeholders to develop and refine workflows and processes that support compliant and efficient study operations. Her experience encompasses regulatory and compliance considerations throughout the research lifecycle, including study start-up, conduct, coordination, and project management, with a current focus on coverage analysis and research billing.

Erica Brown

Erica Brown is the Director of Research Administration for the Department of Pediatrics and Darby Children’s Research Institute. She oversees all that is research in the department which includes twenty subspecialty divisions. Her teams include Grant Administration, Pediatrics Research Group (study coordination) and Darby Children’s Research Institute Administration. She has been employed at MUSC for over 21 years. She has worked in Pediatrics and the Department of Public Health Sciences as a Grants Coordinator and Program Coordinator. She has a MA from College of Charleston and BA from UNC Charlotte both in Communications. Erica obtained her CRA (Certified Research Administrator) in January of 2012.

Hillary Chase 

Hillary Chase is the Division Trainer for Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR). She graduated from UW-Stevens Point with a major in environmental education and minor in captive wildlife. Currently she oversees all animal training for DLAR. She started her career within DLAR in 2017 as an animal care technician moving into the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) a year later. After supervising the VDL she became DLAR's first dedicated trainer. As the trainer she assists DLAR employees and research staff to ensure high quality of care.

Karen Ehmann Osgood

Karen Ehmann Osgood is the Fiscal Manager for the Department of Medicine’s Divisions of Pulmonary & Critical Care, Gastroenterology & Hepatology, and Pulmonary Transplant and Gastroenterology Transplant subunits. Her responsibilities include the financial management of post-award grants and contracts, as well as all unrestricted funds for these Divisions. She also has a role with Central Finance navigating the Payroll Accounting Adjustment (PAA) and Payroll Costing Allocation (PCA) processes. Karen started working at MUSC in 2001. She has an MBA from Clemson University.

Erica Ellington

Erica Ellington serves as the Deputy Director of Compliance and Research Compliance Officer for MUSC. She directs the research auditing and research compliance programs. Prior to working in University Compliance, Erica also worked as a research program manager and grants administrator at MUSC. She has over 25 years of research administration, program management, and finance experience. Erica received a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of South Carolina. She is also a Certified Research Administrator (CRA) and is Certified in Healthcare Research Compliance (CHRC).

Kelly Hickman

Kelly Hickman is the Associate Director of Communication and Development in the Office of Clinical Research (OCR) at MUSC. She develops communication strategies, digital learning programs, and research workforce initiatives that support clinical research operations across MUSC. Kelly also founded and leads the Research Community Hub (RCH), an enterprise-wide networking and professional development initiative connecting research professionals across departments and locations.

She oversees OCR's digital communication channels, including its websites, and serves as editor-in-chief of the OCR newsletter. Kelly also creates training programs that strengthen clarity, consistency, and workforce readiness across OCR teams, and contributes to statewide clinical research expansion through communication strategy, training development, and regional engagement.

Kelly holds a BA in Organizational & Strategic Communications and professional certifications in digital accessibility, instructional design, online learning, leadership, and is a MUSC Health Just Culture Certified Specialist. Prior to joining MUSC in 2019, she worked across the financial services, higher education, and municipal government sectors, supporting strategic planning, digital engagement, public communication, and large-scale event coordination. 

Caroline Hider

Caroline Hider began her career at MUSC in 2019. She is currently a Grants Administrator II in the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP). She oversees Federal/Foundation submissions & sponsored awards for her assigned departments, interprets policies & procedures, and acts as the University’s official liaison for funding agencies. Caroline also works as part of ORSP’s outgoing Subawards team. Caroline graduated from Presbyterian College with her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and from the College of Charleston with her MBA.

Greg Horres

Greg Horres serves as a Senior Grants Administrator for the Office of Grants and Contracts Accounting. In this role, Greg is responsible for post-award administration of sponsored grants and contracts awarded to the University. These responsibilities include financial reporting, applying cost accounting standards to grant expenditures, invoicing, administration, and cash management. He is also the Team Lead for Award Set-ups. His team is responsible for setting up awards and grants in OurDay. Greg has been at MUSC since 2006. Prior to joining GCA in December of 2011, he was a Fiscal Tech II in the Department of Neurosciences. He has been an instructor with the IDEA program for 4 years and is happy to share his post award knowledge. Greg received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Winthrop University and his Master of Business Administration degree from Charleston Southern University.

Christine Hudson

Christine Hudson serves as the ClinCard by Greenphire Program Manager and the Clinical Research Sponsor Budgeting Analyst Manager in the Office of Clinical Research (OCR). Prior to her role at the OCR, she worked as a research coordinator in the Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery as well as the South Carolina Clinical and Translational Research (SCTR) Institute’s Research and Coordination Management (RCM) group. Her current responsibilities include managing the reloadable electronic participant remuneration program, ClinCard by Greenphire, as well as managing the OCR Budgeting service which includes developing and negotiating budgets for corporate clinical research trials. Christine received her Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from the College of Charleston.

Jennifer Hutson

Jennifer Hutson serves as a Senior Grants Administrator for the Office of Grants and Contracts Accounting (GCA). In this role, Jennifer is responsible for post-award administration of sponsored grants and contracts awarded to the University. These responsibilities include Effort Reporting, maintaining policies and procedures, training, and web content creation. She has 25 years of experience in GCA. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Business with an emphasis in Finance from the College of Charleston and her Master of Business Administration from the Citadel.

Diana Lee-Chavarria

Diana Lee-Chavarria is the Assistant Director for Operations for Translational Science Education and Workforce Development at the South Carolina Clinical & Translational Research (SCTR) Institute.

In this role, Diana leads strategic initiatives to develop and implement innovative research education and professional development programs aimed at strengthening the research workforce pipeline. She oversees the design, execution, and day-to-day operations of SCTR Workforce Development programs and administers mentored career development awards for junior faculty, clinical trialists, and graduate students. Diana also facilitates training partnerships with external collaborators across the CTSA consortium and acts as the primary liaison with federal agencies and other sponsoring organizations.

Diana holds a BA in Journalism and an MA in Health & Human Services Administration, and is a recent graduate of the MUSC Advanced Leadership Program. Prior to joining MUSC in 2017, Diana worked in government relations, health policy, and the non-profit sector, where she oversaw the development and implementation of an educational training course for patient advocates.

John Murphy

John Murphy currently serves as a Grants Administrator II in the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP). In his current role, John works with Federal and Foundation sponsored grants and is a member of the ORSP subaward team issuing outgoing subawards. His primary responsibilities include grant application review and submission, interpretation of policies and procedures, management of sponsored projects for assigned departments across campus, federal award closeouts, and acts as the point of contact for many of the university’s out-going subawards. John has been with MUSC ORSP since 2019. Prior to joining ORSP, John worked as a Grants, Contracts, and Procurement Specialist for the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy & Financing and the Colorado Department of Local Affairs. John has received a Master of Arts degree in Communication Management from the University of Dayton and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Denver.

Sherri Lucas

Sherri Lucas serves as a Sponsor Invoicing Manager in the Office of Clinical Research (OCR), where she has specialized in corporate clinical trial invoicing and revenue optimization since joining MUSC in 2019. Sherri serves as a clinical trial invoicing subject matter expert (SME) for MUSC’s Clinical Trials Management System (CTMS), OnCore. Sherri received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Science in Forensic Accounting and Accounting from Carlow University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Prior to MUSC, Sherri worked in the corporate and non-profit sectors and federal civil service.

Emily Martin

Emily Martin currently serves as a Grants Administrator II in the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP). In her current role, she works with Federal and Foundation sponsored grants as well as VA Personnel Service Agreements. Her primary responsibilities include grant application review and submission, interpretation of policies and procedures, service as the University’s official liaison for funding agencies and VA PSAs, and management of sponsored projects for assigned departments across campus. She has been with MUSC for since 2019. Prior to joining ORSP, she worked as a Fiscal Analyst/Accountant II and Grants Administrator I in the Department of Public Health Sciences. Emily received her Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and Financial Economics from Anderson University and her Master of Science in Accountancy degree from the College of Charleston.

Katie Mellis

Katie Mellis serves as a Program Manager with the Office of Clinical Research, working as a Corporate Clinical Trial Budgeting Analyst and ClinCard Participant Remuneration Administrator. Her current responsibilities include coordinating the reloadable electronic participant remuneration program, ClinCard by Greenphire, as well as invoicing for several corporate sponsored clinical research trials and developing and negotiating budgets for corporate sponsored clinical research trials. Katie has been with MUSC since 2016 and previously served as an Administrative Coordinator for the University Risk Management Department. Katie received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Limestone University and her Associate in Applied Science in Accounting from Trident Technical College.

Cyndi Rosenblatt

Cyndi Rosenblatt, MPA, CPIA, is the IACUC Program Manager in the Office of Research Integrity. She joined the IACUC office in 2006 and stepped up as the Program Manager in 2008. She earned her credential as a Certified Professional in IACUC Administration (CPIA) in 2008. Cyndi has been very active in promoting educational and collaborative opportunities for the basic scientists on campus and works closely with investigators and laboratory staff to ensure the highest standards in animal care and use are maintained.

Michael E. Smith, Ph.D.

Dr. Michael E. Smith serves at the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and Stem Cell Research Oversight (SCRO) Program Manager in the Office of Research Integrity (ORI). He earned his Ph.D. in Neurosciences in 2000 and has worked in academic research settings his entire career. Michael joined ORI in 2019 but has been employed by MUSC since 2006 as both a Program Manager and an Assistant Professor.

Rebekah Whichard

Rebekah Whichard originally began her career at MUSC in 2002, working in the Digestive Disease center as a Clinical Research Coordinator. During her time in the DDC, she conducted numerous industry-sponsored trials as well as NIH trials. Rebekah also served as an IRB reviewer for IRB III for 5 years. She returned to MUSC in the fall of 2023, working with the IRB as a Grants Coordinator for IRB III and Exempt studies before moving into the role of Administrator for Education and Training. Rebekah received her Bachelor of Arts degree from College of Charleston.

Donna York

Donna York serves as a Grants Administrator in the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (ORSP), with assignment to the Federal/Foundation Team. Some of her responsibilities include working closely with her assigned departments to provide guidance with submissions, both with review and transmission, negotiation and setup of awards, interpretation of policies and guidelines, and participation as a liaison for funding agencies. Donna has been employed with MUSC since 2017 and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from Lenoir-Rhyne University.
