MUSC leadership has charged the Stem Cell Research Oversight (SCRO) committee with oversight responsibilities for all research projects that fall under the Research Using Human Stem Cells Policy. The scope of the MUSC Research Using Human Stem Cells Policy is limited to a well-defined subset of life sciences research that involves the derivation or use of human pluripotent stem cells at MUSC. The aim of this policy is to help ensure that such research is conducted with the highest ethical and scientific research standards, and in compliance with all applicable federal, and state regulations, MUSC policies, and the requirements of extramural research sponsors.

Compliance
The designated SCRO Committee shall provide scientific and ethical review and recommendations for approval of MUSC research on human stem cell lines as described in this policy. The SCRO Committee shall ensure that human stem cell research protocols conform to the research and ethics guidelines and regulations of the organization(s) funding the research.
In circumstances where a funding organization does not have established ethics guidelines and regulations, the MUSC SCRO Committee will follow the major recommendations outlined in the 2012 Amendments to the National Academies’ Guidelines for Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research and the international voluntary standards written by the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR).

Education & Training
Mandatory Stem Cell Training
CITI Human Stem Cell Research modules:
Once researchers complete these education requirements, CITI training will be valid indefinitely. As research goals change, however, additional modules may need to be taken.
To take the CITI Human Stem Cell Research, take the following steps:
- Log in with your NetID.
- Click on the hyperlink “Main Menu” (almost at the top, left).
- Click on the hyperlink “Add a Course or Update Learner Groups” (in the black rimmed-box, titled My Learner Tools for Medical University of South Carolina).
- Click the box for Human Stem Cell Research , click Next.
- Read the instructions and follow them along.
- You’ll be guided back to the list of courses you should complete. But before you can access the modules, you need to click the “Complete The Integrity Assurance
- Statement before beginning the course” link.
- After completing all required modules, you may print out a Completion Report. There is, however, no need to email or submit this to the SCRO. The SCRO manager can
- check your completion records with administrative access to CITI database.
- Log out.
Meeting Dates & Deadlines
The SCRO currently meets on an ad hoc or as needed basis.
SCRO registrations are approved for a 3 year period with annual notification to the SCRO. The SCRO will contact the investigators for renewals and notifications; however, it is the responsibility of the investigator to ensure that an active approved SCRO registration is maintained including submission of amendments when changes to the research and personnel involved are required.
