Online Recruitment Tools

June 08, 2020 and ResearchMatch are two online recruitment tools available to MUSC researchers.

With COVID-19 being a significant barrier to in-person study recruitment, now is the time for research teams to familiarize themselves with online recruitment tools!

Being South Carolina’s only academic medical center, MUSC is typically an ideal venue for recruiting research participants. With a large array of on-campus recruitment resources and patient familiarity with research being a component of their care, many researchers haven’t felt the need to extend recruitment beyond the clinical setting. When hospital operations as we have known them came to a screeching halt in March with the arrival of COVID-19, so did (in many ways) study recruitment strategies. Our research community has been forced to think outside the box when it comes to finding new and safe means of reaching their patient population. SCTR’s SUCCESS Center is devoting significant time and energy to help with these efforts, a large part of which involves familiarizing researchers with our free, online recruitment tools.

MUSC manages, a statewide research study directory that allows individuals to search studies recruiting throughout the state by keywords, researcher or institution. It’s functionality also includes optional social media sharing of study descriptions as well as email notifications about new studies for those who choose to sign-up for alerts. Researchers can recruit through by selecting this recruitment option in the eIRB application and writing a lay friendly description of the project and its eligibility criteria. Because pulls information from the eIRB, studies displayed on the website are only those listed as actively recruiting. SCTR’s SUCCESS Center gets numerous calls each day from individuals looking for research taking place at MUSC and this is the website to which our staff consistently directs them. Trust us when we say it gets a LOT of activity. Questions about can be directed to the SUCCESS Center at 843-792-8300.

MUSC is also lucky to share in the use of the country-wide online recruitment resource, ResearchMatch, built and managed by Vanderbilt but utilized by institutions all over the nation, is a free and secure online tool researchers can use to access individuals who are interested in being research participants. Individuals create profiles in ResearchMatch with health and demographic information and then researchers, with IRB approval, can search and message de-identified volunteers that meet study criteria. When volunteers get messaged about a study, they can express interest in getting more info and/or participating, following which they are linked with the study team. It’s that simple! Questions about ResearchMatch can be directed to Tara Pittman, MUSC’s institutional liaison at 843-792-2926 or

An exciting opportunity is coming up shortly to learn more about ResearchMatch! Loretta Byrne, the ResearchMatch National Project Manager from Vanderbilt will be joining us for a virtual Lunch & Learn to provide an in-depth explanation of the website, its history, and functionality. The best way to get excited about, and familiar with, the platform is to hear it explained (and have your questions answered) by an expert. For those looking for online recruitment opportunities, this presentation is a MUST SEE. Information and registration can be found below. Please sign up in advance, if you are interested in joining us. And feel free to forward to colleagues as well- everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

If you are a researcher or a member of a research team needing assistance to adjust your recruitment strategies during these unprecedented times, please reach out to SCTR’s recruitment core.
