The Office of Research Development identifies extramural funding opportunities and helps MUSC faculty members prepare competitive proposals, with an emphasis on strategic research areas prioritized by the colleges and university administration as well as institutional research resources and infrastructure.

Goals

  • To alert investigators about funding opportunities
  • To educate investigators about grantsmanship issues and proposal development
  • To assist in preparing competitive proposals
  • To optimize success in obtaining competitive support for research infrastructure and training
  • To increase awareness of MUSC research expertise and resources
  • To help communicate MUSC research strengths and achievements

Project Development Activities

  • Help identify potential matching funds, complementary expertise, or potential collaborators
  • Assist in development of large trans-university or multi-institutional proposals, such as
    • Program projects
    • Center grants
    • Training grants
    • Shared research resources and instrumentation
    • Construction or renovation projects
  • Provide grantsmanship workshops and individual consultation
  • Organize and complete supporting information, such as
    • Biographical sketches (publications and research support)
    • Resources and environment (institutional “boilerplate”)
    • Tables of key personnel other support or other relevant grants
    • Current and previous trainees
    • Organizational charts and schematic diagrams
    • “Just-in-time” requirements

Funding Opportunity Activities

  • Perform customized searches based on investigator-provided key areas of interest
  • Monitor external funding announcements and send email alerts to targeted interest groups
  • Provide access and instruction for individual use of web-based funding alert services
  • Publish a monthly electronic newsletter highlighting funding opportunities, trends and changes
  • Clarify and confirm sponsor guidelines, deadlines, forms or special requirements
  • Publicize and coordinate opportunities with restrictions on eligibility or number of applicants
