On August 20th the National Science Foundation (NSF) announced how it will implement a new legislative requirement that all NSF-funded research trainees must receive appropriate guidance in the ethical conduct of research. Effective January 4, 2010, when an institution submits a funding proposal to NSF, the institution must have in place a plan to provide appropriate training and oversight in the responsible and ethical conduct of research to all undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral researchers who will be supported by NSF to conduct the research. While training plans are not required in the proposals, the NSF reserves the right to review such plans upon request.
