Lindbergh-Carrel Prize (Elisabeth")

LINDBERGH-CARREL PRIZE

The sculpture reflects a real story about the origin of Charles Lindbergh's interest in the heart pump. Elisabeth Morrow, sister of Lindbergh's wife Anne Morrow, died due to heart disease. Lindbergh was disappointed that contemporary medical technology could not provide an artificial heart pump which would allow for heart surgery. After Elisabeth's death, he together with Alexis Carrel developed the first heart pump. The prototype served as the foundation for future development of cardiovascular surgery that now saves many lives.

Lindbergh-Carrel Prize is awarded for outstanding contribution to development of perfusion and bioreactor technologies for organ preservation and growth.
