NIH grant applications are evaluated by a peer review group. This effort is managed by the Center for Scientific Review (CSR). The CSR has posted the regular study session rosters, schedules and descriptions on their website. In addition, this site addresses many other questions and concerns about the review process. In some cases for example,
with Requests for Applications (RFAs) the sponsoring institute
at NIH may determine that a special review panel will be needed, and
will assemble an ad hoc review group or special emphasis panel. The
roster and meeting schedule for special review groups and special emphasis
panels are not generally published in advance of the review meeting,
although this information is always appended to the summary statement.
NIH always provides applicants with the name and contact information
of the assigned scientific review administrator (SRA) who coordinates
the review process. In cases where an application goes to a special
review group, review information may be obtained directly through the
review administrator. This information pertains to one facet of the NIH review process. In order to understand the wide scope of policies, guidelines and issues involved with the review process, the Office of Extramural Research has provided a large amount of information on their website. This page not only introduces the complete peer review process, but also provides links to review rosters and schedules, review guidelines, regular newsletters on peer review at NIH, and much more. Please visit the Office of Extramural Research website to learn more about the review of NIH grant applications.
