Nutrition Research Summit

The SC Nutrition Research Consortium is changing the format of the annual Nutrition Research Summit to attempt to attract participants who are active in nutrition-related research (broadly defined) and who are likely to be able to establish collaborative projects with counterparts at other research universities.

The Nutrition Consortium Summit is scheduled for Friday, November 3, 2006, in Columbia, SC. The purpose of the meeting is to put these active researchers in touch with one another to stimulate collaborative efforts in the three main areas of interest to the consortium (Energy balance including obesity and its comorbidities; nutrient-gene interactions; and community-based nutrition research).

The program includes notable guest speakers, including: George Bray MD, Chief of the Division of Clinical Obesity and Metabolism at The Pennington Institute, who will focus on the metabolic process for obesity and diabetes; Jose Ordovas from Tufts, who studies the impacts of interactions between nutrition, behavior and genetics on human health; and Pamela Starke-Reed (invited), Deputy Director, Division of Nutrition Research Coordinator of the National Institute on Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases, will discuss NIH's funding priorities related to nutrition as part of the Roadmap Clinical and Translational Science Award Program (CTSA).

There will be time in the afternoon for summit participants to join a research discussion group. The speakers will join the discussion groups to explore funding opportunities.

Interested individuals can contact Dr. Marilyn Laken (lakenm@musc.edu) or Dr. Pat O'Neil (oneilp@musc.edu), and visit the web site of the South Carolina Nutrition Research Consortium at http://www.scnrc.org/index.shtml.
