NIAID
opens on-line database for international bug-borne research
International research on bug-borne disease is the focus of a new
on-line release by NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious
Diseases (NIAID). The new database complements a previous focus
on bug-borne disease research in the US.
This second of the two-part web series concentrates on diseases found
outside the U.S. that are transmitted to humans by mosquitoes, ticks
and other arthropods. Diseases highlighted include malaria, dengue "breakbone"
fever, leishmaniasis and river blindness.
The site also highlights NIAID efforts to understand infectious disease
processes and environmental factors key to disease transmission. The
information gained by studying the biology of these diseases enables
scientists to develop effective diagnostics, treatments, vaccines and
prevention methods.
Research highlights include: Insect and Parasite Genomes, Vaccine and
Drug Research, Genetically Modified Insects, Bug Saliva and Vaccines,
Ecology of Bug-Borne Diseases. The focus on bug-borne disease research
contains highlights of this and similar research, including links to
researchers' web sites.
