Rep. Clyburn and MUSC spearhead National Conference on Health Disparities, July 19-21

Congressman James E. Clyburn visited MUSC just after July 4 to go over the final planning details for the National Conference on Health Disparities: Past, Present and Future, which will occur July 19-21 in Charleston. Billed as “a full court press to eliminate health disparities,” the national summit meeting will be held at the Charleston Marriott Hotel, 170 Lockwood Boulevard.  The conference organizer is David E. Rivers, MUSC Director of Public Information and Community Outreach. Registration and other meeting information is available at http://www.nationalhealthdisparitiesconference.com.

Sponsors of the event include The Medical University of South Carolina and South Carolina State University, The National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities, The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc., and The Congressional Black Caucus and Health Braintrust. This conference will bring together political leaders, healthcare providers and experts to take center-stage in national dialogue to eliminate health disparities.

By incorporating historical context, proven strategies and visionary thinking, the conference's overarching goal is to examine and fine-tune past successes in reducing health disparities and transplant them nationwide. The conference will offer guidance to all those seeking the reduction and elimination of health disparities. Health care professionals will also address health disparities such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, hypertension and diabetes.

Discussion will feature the "Who's Who" among public policy makers and notable key players in the movement to improve the plight of millions. In addition to Congressman Clyburn speakers include: the first female physician elected to Congress, Honorable Donna Christian-Christensen (D-VI); Mayor of Atlanta, the Honorable Shirley Franklin; Executive Director of the BET Foundation, Ms. Lynda M. Dorman; Senior VP of the United Health Foundation, Dr. Reed V. Tuckson; Director of the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities, Dr. John Ruffin; US Public Health Service Captain, Dr. Walter W. Williams and many more.
