K02 model applications offered by NHLBI

In response to frequent requests for examples of successful applications that were highly rated by the review group, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute has posted two model proposals for the Independent Scientist Award (K02) to aid individuals who intend to apply for this little-known career development mechanism. One model focuses on the topic of lung development and vascular biology research; the other focuses on fluid flow and vascular adhesion. The applications are offered as examples only and should not preclude potential applicants from seeking further advice from experienced colleagues or from research training staff members at NHLBI. To download the model proposals, go to http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/funding/training/redbook/k02models.htm.

In the model proposals, information of an identifying and proprietary nature – such as the level of effort, the timetable, the name of the applicant and names of collaborators, mentors, and institutions – has been removed and replaced with the underline symbol "." In some instances, the applicant's name has been replaced with "the candidate," and the names of institutions have been replaced with "the institution." Also, these model applications do not include the face page; budget pages; biographical sketch; other support; letters of reference; statements by consultant(s), and collaborator(s); institutional commitment to candidate; literature cited; consortium/contractual arrangements; consultants; and appendix pages. All of these must be included in K02 applications.

In addition, the model applications use an earlier version of PHS 398. However, current applicants should use the current version of the PHS 398 (rev. 4/06) application. Once the transition to Grants.gov is made for the K02 mechanisms, applications will be required to use the SF 424 Research and Related (R&R) forms. NIH will announce the K02 grant mechanism change in the NIH Guide to Grants and Contracts, when it is scheduled.
