Calculating “person months” for NIH budgets will be easier with on-line converter

Although the National Institutes of Health historically has used percent of time and effort (% FTE) to budget personnel costs on grants and contracts, most other federal sponsors used "person months." With transition to electronic submittal and switch to the SF424 (R&R) forms rather than the PHS398 application kit, all budgets must now use person months as the unit of measurement. The NIH Office of Extramural Research has created a Person Months FAQ page to help grant-seekers. Included in the FAQs is a handy interactive Excel Conversion Table to assist in calculating person months. The calculator is available on the Grants Policy and Guidance web site under the heading Policy Resources>General Resources.
