NIH
launches health careers website
The National Institutes of Health (NIH), Office of Science Education
has launched a new Web site, "LifeWorks.” The site is designed
as a resource for middle school and high school students, parents, educators,
and school guidance/career counselors to explore the diversity of careers
in the field. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, health and
medical science jobs are expected to be among the fastest growing jobs
in the nation over the next 10 years.
The new site allows visitors to search more than 100 careers by interest
area, median salary or education required. To attract curious but less
knowledgeable young visitors, the interest search covers broad areas
like “artistic,” “investigative,” and “social.”
Each job entry contains a short description of the career, the necessary
education, and special skills, as well as links to more information
on the relevant professional societies and a job outlook through 2010.
The site also features personal interviews with health professionals
who talk about their daily work routines, why they chose their careers,
what they love and hate about their jobs, and what they do in their
free time. The Office of Science Education hopes the site will be useful
for students, teachers and career counselors alike.
