New Facilities and Administrative (F & A) Cost and Fringe Benefits Rates Agreement

The University has successfully completed negotiations with the Public Health Service for new F&A  (indirect cost) rates. The new rates are retroactive to July 01, 2001 and are as follows:

a. On campus organized research 46.0%

b. On campus instruction 35.9%

c. Off campus rates 26.0%

d. Other sponsored activities on campus 30.0%

Our on campus organized research rate increase of 3% (43% to 46%) is extremely gratifying. It is also relatively unusual for an institution to have such a significant increase.

During those negotiations, new fringe benefits rates were also established as follow:

a. Staff 26.6%

b. Post Doc 16.5%

c. Student/Temp-no benefits 4.0%

These fringe benefits rates will take effect on 7/1/02.

In response to feedback from the faculty, we have also lowered our clinical trials rate from 29% to 25%. This was a locally determined rate, and the downward adjustment reflects both feedback from investigators and the results of comparing our rate with peers in the southeast and throughout the nation.

If you have any questions regarding these new F & A and/or fringe benefits rates, you may direct your initial inquiry to the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs (2-3838).  Please retain a copy of this memorandum for future reference.
