5th edition of NIH-CDC biosafety manual now available

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have revised the Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) manual. It is now available at http://www.cdc.gov/od/ohs/biosfty/bmbl5/bmbl5toc.htm. From a biosafety perspective, the latest revision of the BMBL 5th edition remains an advisory document, proposing practices for the safe conduct of work in both biomedical and clinical laboratories.

In the latest revision of the BMBL, chapters were added; the principle and practices of biosafety and risk assessment chapters were expanded; agent and summary statements were revised; and efforts were made to synchronize suggestions with supervision issued and regulations propagated by other federal agencies. The following topics were added:

  • Occupational medicine and immunization
  • Decontamination and sterilization
  • Laboratory biosecurity and risk assessment
  • Biosafety Level 3 (Ag) laboratories
  • Agent summary statements for some agricultural pathogens
  • Biological toxins
