The NIH salary cap amount sought by the research community and proposed by the Senate has been agreed upon, as it will be maintained at Executive Level 1. The House and Senate have agreed on the FY 2002 appropriations bill for the Department of Health and Human Services, and the President is expected to sign the bill into law. Currently, Executive Level 1 is $161,200. If warranted, the Executive Level pay scales are adjusted each year by Order of the President, normally effective January 1. To date, no decision has been made public about adjustments for 2002. In the past NIH has issued a Policy Guide Notice regarding the salary cap with detailed implementation guidance. Last year's notice was issued January 11, 2001 and a similar notice is expected to be posted early in 2002.
