NIH has implemented a new reporting requirement for grantee inventions

Effective January 1, 2002, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) now requires grantees to report the commercial name of any product approved by the Food and Drug Administration that utilizes an invention made with federal support. Research grantees will report this information by way of the standard report form, which is used by NIH and other agencies to track the licensing and utilization of new inventions. The new requirement is part of NIH's response to certain members of Congress who have inquired about the contribution of taxpayer-funded research to the development of commercial pharmaceuticals. The NIH notice of the requirement can be found at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-02-019.html
