Electron Microscopy and Histology Facilities (Pathology and Laboratory Medicine) (rev date 10/04)
Director: Debra Hazen-Martin, PhD

These facilities occupy 1041 ft2 of shared laboratory space on the 2nd floor of the Walton Research Building, designed for tissue preparation, ultramicrotomy, freeze fracture, and operation of the electron microscopes. Electron microscopy instrumentation includes JEOL JEM1210 and Hitachi H7000 high-resolution transmission electron microscopes (TEM) and a JSEM 5410LB scanning electron microscope (SEM). Other equipment includes three Reichart Ultracut E microtomes, one equipped for frozen sectioning, a Polaron sputter coater, an EMS 850 critical point dryer, and ancillary laboratory equipment and supplies.  Equipment for tissue processing includes a Leica TP 1020 tissue processor, a Microm AP 280-3 embedding center, Microm HM 325 and 350S microtomes, a Microm HM 500 M cryostat, a Pelco DFE-10 microwave with steady temperature and a 3420 microwave load cooler with Pelco scientific microwave. This facility includes a complete histology set-up with dehydration/staining baths and slide incubation tables for specimen preparation.  Dissecting and laboratory microscopes are also available. A fully equipped darkroom for processing and printing EM film is located within the facility.
