The Office of Research Development has compiled information about MUSC, its components and programs, primarily to assist MUSC faculty, staff, and trainees in preparing grant and contract proposals. Our aim is to provide brief descriptions of major elements and initiatives.
Use the list of hyperlinks (below) to view individual descriptions that you can copy and paste from the web page to your desktop document. You can also download the entire "boilerplate" document as a word file.
Use this text judiciously. Select information that is pertinent to your project and edit it appropriately. Do not insert it into your document without review. No reviewer of a typical research project proposal wants to read a long “Resources” section. Large, multi-investigator proposals such as center grants, program projects, institutional training grants or research infrastructure mechanisms, may include more extensive descriptions of institutional resources. Even in these special cases, the contents should be thoughtfully selected for relevance and impact.
Remove the highlighted ‘rev. dates.’ These dates are provided to let you know how current the information is. If you fail to remove them, the reviewer may get the impression that you did not exercise judgment in constructing your proposal.
As Principal Investigator, you are responsible for the completeness, relevance and accuracy of your entire proposal. Every proposal preparer is responsible for putting the information into a format—including font and type size—that conforms to sponsor guidelines.
The boilerplate is presented in a format that follows the PHS398 Form Page for Resources. Extensive additional information follows under the heading of ‘Other.’ If you are working on a large multi-investigator proposal, you may wish to incorporate some of the text in the introductory or overview sections. In other instances, such as R01, R03 or R21 research proposals, information about core facilities or specialized instrumentation critical to your proposed experiments would belong in the ‘Resources’ section.
