MUSC and Ralph H. Johnson VAMC Human Research Protection Programs (HRPP) Fully Accreditated by the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP)
In September 2009, MUSC achieved a milestone with notification that the Council of the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP) had awarded full accreditation status to the institution's Human Research Protection Program (HRPP). In the spring of 2009, the Ralph H. Johnson VAMC had received provisional accreditation, pending accreditation of MUSC, their IRB of record. Thus, with both institutions' HRPP fully accreditated by AAHRPP, MUSC and the Ralph H. Johnson VAMC are demonstrating the most comprehensive protection for research participations and the highest quality of research.
Over 75% of U.S. Medical Schools have initiated the process for AAHRPP accreditation of their Human Research Protection Programs. Of these, 36% have received full AAHRPP accreditation. AAHRPP is the contracted agency for accreditation of such programs at Veterans Administration Medical Centers. The accreditation process involves all aspects of a Human Research Protection Program and individual elements reviewed include the following:
education and training of all personnel involved in human subject
research;
submission and review of humans subject research protocols by independent review committees (Institutional Review Boards) with required expertise and community representatives;
financial management and review;
risk management;
research integrity;
conflict of interest disclosure and management;
clinical services and investigational drug pharmacy;
community outreach and engagement;
monitoring of all approved human subject research.
These individual elements blend to form a system that is robust, interactive and constantly improving.
